The Archangel Raphael

Mexican, first half of the 18th century

The Archangel Raphael

Oil on canvas

41 x 32 ¼ inches; unframed

This painting shows strong similarities to the work of the Mexican painter-priest Fray Miguel de Herrera(1729-1780).

We can see Herrera’s influence in the well-proportioned, erect body with a nice Baroque twist, the shape of the archangel’s head and delicately drawn face with almost cupid-bow lips, the sheer under-sleeve covering part of his upper arms and his forearms.

The pattern on the angel’s painted leather cuirass was popular during Mexico’s late Baroque period.
